MARGIT KIRSS-ELSAYED
Mina olen Margit – õpetaja, kokk, koolitaja, maailmarändur ja pärandtoidu hoidja. Ma töötan õpetajana Olustvere Teenindus- ja Maamajanduskoolis ja olen MTÜ Kirsikooli asutaja ja eestvedaja . Minu loodud kooli keskmes on keeled, kultuur, toit ja lood.
Olen õppinud pedagoogikat ja inglise keelt, kuid minu suur kirg on keelte kõrval alati olnud toit – mitte ainult retseptidena, vaid kultuuri, identiteedi ja mäluna. Mind huvitab, kuidas inimesed mäletavad oma kodu maitsete kaudu ning kuidas toit aitab hoida alles väikeste rahvaste lugusid. Just seetõttu on minu südameasjaks Eesti pärandtoit, kohalikud traditsioonid, metsataimed, hooajalisus ning vanade retseptide uus elu.

I am Margit — a teacher, chef, trainer, world traveller and guardian of culinary heritage. I work as a teacher at Olustvere School of Service and Rural Economics and am the founder and driving force behind the non-profit Kirsikool.
At the heart of the school I founded are languages, culture, food and stories. I studied education and English, but alongside languages, food has always been my great passion — not simply as recipes, but as culture, identity and memory. I am fascinated by how people remember home through flavours and how food can preserve the stories of small nations.
This is why Estonian culinary heritage, local traditions, wild edible plants, seasonal ingredients and breathing new life into old recipes are so close to my heart. Over the years, I have taught both young people and adults, delivered cooking workshops, created educational materials and organised a variety of cultural and food-related events.
My work brings together traditional Estonian farmhouse cooking, Nordic simplicity, international influences and a creative approach. I believe food does not have to be complicated to be special — often, a single story, a familiar aroma or an old recipe is enough to bring people together.
I have also served as the head chef for the Estonian Song and Dance Celebration, overseeing the catering of large numbers of people at one of Estonia’s most important cultural events. This experience taught me how to combine traditional Estonian cuisine, large-scale organisation and warm hospitality. Alongside cooking, I also explore food as an art form.
My exhibition, Love on a Slow Flame, brings together food, photographic art and storytelling, exploring love, home and the meeting of cultures. In Australia, I hope to bring you a little piece of Estonia — flavours, stories and warmth that will make people feel, if only for a moment, at home.
In addition to cooking, I am also involved in culinary art. My exhibition “Love Over a Low Fire” combines food, photographic art, and stories, and explores themes of love, home, and the meeting of cultures.
Here in Australia, I want to bring you a little piece of Estonia—flavors, stories, and warmth that make people feel at home, even if just for a moment.
