ILONA TREIMAN

Ilona Treiman is a jewellery artist and educator. She graduated in metalwork from the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR (ERKI, now the Estonian Academy of Arts) in 1984 and later continued her studies at the Aalto University School of Arts and Design in Helsinki. Ilona’s work emerges at the intersection of material and thought.

She is interested in how different materials carry memory, time and meaning, and how these can be transformed into a wearable visual language. In her work, she combines metal, natural and found materials, and a variety of techniques to explore the relationship between people, nature, the environment and societal power structures.

Her creations are characterised by a sculptural sensibility, subtlety and a continuous search for balance between fragility and resilience, the past and new beginnings. Ilona Treiman is a member of the Estonian Artists’ Association, Ornamo – the Finnish Association of Designers, and the Artists’ Association of Finland. Since 1985, she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions.

Her work has been exhibited throughout Europe, the United States, China, Japan and South Korea, and is held in museum and private collections in Estonia, Finland, elsewhere in Europe and the United States. In 2019, she received the Ede Kurrel Prize for Estonian Metal Art. For many years, Treiman has worked in Finland as a teacher of metalwork and Estonian language.

Teaching has been a natural part of her artistic journey — an opportunity to share knowledge, foster dialogue and inspire people to discover the expressive possibilities of materials. Living and working in Finland for many years has given her first-hand experience of how identity, a sense of belonging and cultural memory are shaped between two countries.

These experiences have profoundly influenced her artistic practice and become an important starting point for her exhibition “Ehe Maa: Matter and Memory”, in which she explores belonging, roots and memory through materials.

At Eesti Päevad 2027 in Sydney, Ilona Treiman will participate with an exhibition and a workshop. The project explores belonging, memory and identity, asking how jewellery and materials can carry personal and shared stories forward. During the workshop, participants will create their own piece of jewellery, drawing inspiration from Estonian national colours and symbolism and reinterpreting them in a contemporary and personal way.
